An export policy is the set of NFS access rules that control who can reach a share and what they can do with it. It’s applied to the NAS service (the SVM) or to a specific NAS interface, and it defines which client hosts or networks are allowed to access the share as well as the permissions and options for those clients (such as read-write or read-only, and root_squash vs no_root_squash). When an NFS client attempts to mount or access a share, ONTAP checks the export policy rules to see if the client’s IP or network matches a rule and what permissions are granted. If there’s a match, the access proceeds with the specified permissions; if not, access is denied. This is why the export policy directly determines who can access NFS shares and how. The other options describe encryption standards, snapshot retention, or RAID configuration, which are not governed by export policies.
